Friday - Sept. 12 - Lunch at Alta Ski Area

Thursday - Mike Here
This afternoon we decided to head for Antelope Island State Park after a gourmet lunch at Subway. Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake and is mostly grassland and low mountains.
It is reached by a 5 mile long causeway.
Great Salt Lake is huge and you can only see a small part of it from here.
We never saw the big horn sheep and mule deer which inhabit the island but we saw many buffalo.

We decided to drive up into the Wasatch Mountains east of Salt Lake City and visit two world class ski areas: Alta & Snowbird. The drive Big & Little Cottonwood Canyons was just awesome. These are very steep canyon walls and steep climbs. Really rugged country where the Mormons cut their granite blocks to build the temple.

As we drove passed Snowbird, I was disappointed to see the Aerial Tram was not running as I know Mary & Judy would have rushed to take it to the top of the mountain.
We finally reached Alta, which is the end of the road. You can't go any farther so we stopped for a picnic lunch. What a beautiful spot.

Alta is one of the oldest ski areas in North America. Great job Jim on driving some pretty hairy roads. Tomorrow we head south for Zion National Park.
